The Hinge dating app has raised $12 million. The app, which is available for iOS and Android, works with your Facebook account. Hinge says you meet real people through your real friends with its dating app.

The Hinge website, Hinge.com, currently shows two people diving into a pool together. TechCrunch reports that the app raised $12 million Series A led by Shasta Ventures. The company plans to use this money to expand overseas.

The concept of using people's Facebook friends and friends of friends to find dates is not a new one but it is much different than the randomness of apps like Tinder. A downside here is that if things do not work out well your friends may find out about it. A plus is that the dating app is likely to be used by more serious daters than than apps like Tinder since it relies on validated profiles. The app will currently show your 25 most recent Facebook photos, but they say in a FAQ that a photo selector is on the agenda.

The company hopes the $18 million will fund them for up to 2 year. Hinge CEO Justin McLeod tells Crain's New York, "It's very exciting. This is a big investment, and we're hoping it will sustain us over the next 18 months to two years."
