The Matchmaking Cabbie

A New Jersey cab driver Ahmed Ibrahim has been playing cupid from his taxi. A New York Daily News article from earlier this year says he has arranged over 70 dates.
He has swapped numbers between hundreds of couples, helped organize more than 70 real dates and at least 19 of his romances have lasted more than a year.

This Thursday, Ibrahim will be decking his yellow cab with red and white hearts and roses in the hope of matching up yet more Mr. and Mrs. Rights.

"I've organized so many dates, and it really makes me feel good about it. I've not had one complaint," Ibrahim, 53, said.

"It's really fun. Driving a taxi in New York is not an easy job so I just try to create some fun."
Here's the video about the matchmaking cabbie from the WSJ.

Love and Dating on the Picket Line

Writers Strike LoveHollywood writers are striking to make sure they get much needed and much deserved payments for new media content. Striking means they have to picket and carry signs. The Daily News reports that actors and writers picketing together presents an opportunity for singles. There was even an impromptu event organized called "Singles' Strike."
"I'm looking for a low-maintenance female who doesn't enjoy the finer things in life," he joked Thursday outside the Fox studio gate in Century City.

The writer for NBC's "My Name is Earl" was joined by about 50 other people for the impromptu event dubbed "Singles' Strike."

Charles Heit, a writer for the Sci Fi Channel's "Painkiller Jane," said he was dreading picket duty until he met Cara Delizia, a petite actress. Then it didn't seem so bad.

The two planned to go to dinner and a movie after putting down their picket signs.

"It's all about solidarity, right?" Delizia said.
If this strike is a long one perhaps there will be a few marriages that result from these picket line meetups.

Forbes Names Best Cities for Singles

Forbes is out with its annual Best Cities for Singles feature. They have made a few changes this year and there is a new number one city - San Francisco.
There have been major changes in the rankings this year. The winner: San Francisco, up from fourth place. It ranked first for culture and received high marks for number of singles, nightlife, online dating and cool. The "city that never sleeps," New York, N.Y., came in a strong second place, thanks to its performance as the country's No. 1 spot for nightlife. Entertainment mecca Los Angeles came in third, Atlanta fourth and Chicago fifth. Rounding out the top 10 are Washington D.C., San Diego, Seattle, Dallas-Fort Worth and Philadelphia.

Denver, meanwhile, our top-ranked city from 2004 to 2006, has dropped to 16th place. But before Denver city elders start beating themselves up over this, we should note that this is largely because, amid several refinements to our methodology this year, we've switched to a new way of defining each city. In the past, the boundaries and population of each city were drawn from the U.S. Census Bureau's list of "Metropolitan Statistical Areas." But in 2007, we've begun using the Census Bureau's "Urbanized Area," which provides a tighter focus on cities themselves.
Wow that's quite the nose dive for Denver falling all the way from the #1 spot to #16. It looks the tighter focus on the city of Denver was not too good for its ranking.

Best Ten Cities for Singles according to Forbes.
  1. San Francisco-Oakland
  2. New York
  3. Los Angeles
  4. Atlanta
  5. Chicago
  6. Wasington
  7. San Diego
  8. Seattle
  9. Dallas-Fort Worth
  10. Philadelphia
The cities are ranked using seven different categories: nightlife, culture, job growth, number of singles, cost of living alone, coolness and online dating. You can see a slideshow of the best forty cities here on Forbes.com.

SFist posts about being number one. Buffalo Rising was glad to see Buffalo make this list this year at #31. You can also see a Google Mashup of Forbes's Best Cities data here (hat tip Google Maps Mania).
